Nashville Veterans Welcome Home Parade and Job Fair Held Saturday

Posted: Updated:
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Jonathan Young got out of the Air Force six months ago and has been looking for a job ever since. After applying to a number of positions he's had some feedback, but so far no takers.

"I feel like the Human Resources Department that's receiving that may not understand exactly what I've done," he said.

Young worked as an intelligence analyst who is now trying to find the civilian equivalent. His wife, Klya, helped him strip his resume of military acronyms civilians simply don't understand.

That's why Brandi Majerus is helping with Saturday's first ever Nashville Veterans Welcome Home Parade and Job Fair to help veterans get in front of the right employers.

"We fought for our brothers and sisters and our family members, but then we come home and we're having to fight a second war to get into employment," Majerus said.

Friday they were out making sure everything will be ready at War Memorial Plaza for folks from big companies to meet as many as 2,000 applicants, and hopefully realize veterans are so much more than what some think.

"There's a stereotype that's put on us that something is mentally, psychologically wrong with each of us for what various reasons, but we are all driven by one purpose and that's our country," she went on to say.

It's an opportunity veterans, like Young, hope lead to good jobs as they start their new life stateside.

"It's been surprisingly hard to find the job that I want, that gives us what we need," he said.

The parade starts Saturday outside the NES building at 10:30 a.m. and then ends up at War Memorial Plaza for a noon Flag Day ceremony honoring veterans. The job fair will go 1 p.m. until 4 p.m.
