NASHVILLE, Tenn. – A Metropolitan Transit Authority bus caught fire Wednesday and caused a significant traffic delay on Interstate 24 westbound in Davidson County.

The incident was reported around 5:15 p.m. at mile marker 55, between Harding Place and Haywood Lane.

Officials with MTA said the bus had just dropped off its last customer when the driver noticed smoke and flames coming from the back of the vehicle.

The driver tried to put out the blaze with a fire extinguisher, but was unsuccessful. He then called 911.

It was not immediately known what led to the fire, but MTA said mechanics are working to determine the cause.

No injuries were reported as a result of the incident.

Westbound traffic was affected for more than two hours, with right lanes blocked. Eastbound traffic was not affected during the incident.

The incident was cleared by 7:30 p.m.
