Mother Indicted In 7-Month-Old Son’s Death

Posted: Updated:

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – A woman has been indicted in connection with the 2013 death of her 7-month-old son.

Officials with the Metro Nashville Police Department said Ericka A. Smith was taken into custody Tuesday, after being indicted by a Davidson County Grand Jury.

The indictment charged the 28-year-old with first-degree murder and three counts of aggravated child neglect.

On February 15, 2013, her son, Jacoby Pitts, was transported to Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt after being found unresponsive by Smith in her apartment in the Edgehill public housing development.

The child died less than three weeks later.

Police said an investigation revealed that alleged negligence by Smith led to his death. The aggravated child neglect counts in the indictment were in regard to Smith’s three other children, who police said are under the age of 10.

Smith was held in the Metro Nashville Jail in lieu of $100,000 bond.
