Prosecution Rests in Contracts Bribery Case

(Story created: 5/24/04)

The state has rested in the first case to come out of our Friends in High Places investigation of state contracts. Former Sundquist official Joanna Ediger is charged with trying to rig a big state contract.

Among the last witnesses against Ediger was a former executive with Sylvan Learning Centers.

Steve Pines told the jury about a six-year affair with Ediger.

Pines said Ediger tried to hook him up with friend of the governor John Stamps for another contract -- this one for $10 million.

Out of that Stamps would have made $1 million.

Pines testified quote.. "The bottom line was that John's role in the company was to provide access to help Sylvan get the contract. He was basically boasting of his relationship with ... Governor Sundquist."

He said Ediger later called and said funding for the contract had fallen through.

The defense is expected to wrap up Tuesday, with the case going to the jury late Tuesday or early Wednesday.
