Ethics Chairman to Recommend Expanding Ford Investigation

(Story created: 3/18/05)

The head of the Senate Ethics Committee says he will recommend expanding the investigation into state Sen. John Ford. He wants to know more about a consulting deal, first uncovered by NewsChannel 5.

This comes after the powerful Senate chairman defended his failure to disclose consulting income from a TennCare-related company.

Now, Ethics Committee Chairman Ron Ramsey, R-Blountville, wants to know more about Ford's efforts to help heat-and-air giant Johnson Controls to win state contracts.

"The one that stands out to me is the Johnson Controls issue because our own rules are very, very plain on the fact that you can't receive compensation if you use your official title or office stationery with any board or agency of state government," Ramsey said.

Ford recently wrote the Ethics Committee, saying: "Those of us who live in glass houses should not be the first to throw stones."

Ramsey calls that a veiled threat.
