Veterans Home Patient Dies, Facility Pledges Improved Conditions
(Story created: 7/5/06)
A state-run veterans nursing home has come up with a plan to improve conditions. This follows an exclusive NewsChannel 5 investigation. But the move comes too late for the veteran at the center of that investigation.
David Lawson died Monday after battling a case of pneumonia.
Last month, Lawson's daughter told NewsChannel 5 that her father had been left with nearly fatal bedsores.
She blamed the neglect on the Tennessee State Veterans Home.
Health regulators followed up and found severe problems inside the Murfreesboro facility. They barred it from accepting new patients until those problems had been fixed.
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation also opened its own investigation.
Now, the state health officials say the home has a new plan in place.
The daughter, Karla Lawson, says she will keep fighting for veterans in her fathers' memory to make sure the home keeps its promises to those who served their country.
