Federal Agency: All Nursing Homes Need Sprinkler Systems

WASHINGTON- All American nursing homes may soon have to be equipped with sprinkler systems.

It's part of an effort to update an estimated 2,500 older facilities around the country.

The majority of the nation's nursing homes already have comprehensive sprinkler systems. But deadly fires in recent years -- notably blazes in Nashville and Hartford, Conn.- highlighted certain safety lapses. Those fires killed 31 people in 2003.

The federal agency that oversees nursing-home safety says there's never been a multiple-fatality fire in a nursing home with an automated, building-wide sprinkler system.
