Driver, Toddler Die in Multi-Car Crash

NOLENSVILLE- The Tennessee Highway Patrol responded to a fatal accident that claimed the life of a 4-year-old child and the driver of another car.

The accident happened before noon Saturday on Nolensville Road in South Nashville.

State troopers said 28-year-old Crystal Maier drove a black Honda southbound on Nolensville Road when she swerved into oncoming traffic.

Authorities said she clipped two cars before traveling a short distance and slamming head-on into another vehicle. In all, five vehicles were involved in the accident, according to the THP.

Eileen Sorto, 4, was thrown from the back seat of a Nissan Maxima. She died en route to the hospital.

Maier died at the scene. Troopers said Maier may have been under the influence of alcohol. Investigators found alcohol inside her car.

They also said that Eileen and Maier were not wearing seat belts.

"If these two individuals had been restrained properly, there's no doubt in my mind, that they would be here today," said Lt. Richard Cash.

The toddler's mother, Jessica Rosales, 32, was transported to the Vanderbilt University Medical Center Saturday. Her condition was unknown Saturday evening.

The driver and a passenger in one of the cars were arrested for leaving the scene of an accident. Authorities said the driver did not have a valid driver's license.
