NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- State Sen. Jerry Cooper has improved to stable condition at a Nashville hospital after being critically injured in a rollover traffic crash Wednesday night.
Other lawmakers saw the Democrat from Morrison at three receptions Wednesday night. They noted he was at the Tennessee Press Association and the Tennessee Chamber of Commerce receptions -- both at the Sheraton in Nashville -- and the Tennessee Bankers' Association reception at the Waller Lansden Dortch law firm downtown.
Other lawmakers said Thursday morning Cooper suffered a broken hand and broken wrist in the crash.
House Speaker Jimmy Naifeh said he was at two receptions also attended by Cooper and said this morning he didn't know whether Cooper drank alcohol last night.
State troopers were told by witnesses that Cooper's sport utility vehicle ran off Interstate 24 as he traveled eastbound, toward his home, about 40 miles southeast of Nashville. The vehicle ran up and embankment and rolled about five times.
