Statue Dedicated For Memphis Grizzlies Executive

(AP) MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The man whose silhouette is the model for the current NBA logo says he would prefer to live in anonymity. That's impossible if your name is Jerry West.

Sunday West was in Morgantown, West Virginia for the dedication of a six-and-a-half-foot statue bearing his likeness.

The former NBA great and current president of basketball operations for the Memphis Grizzlies says it was almost embarrassing to have something like that on display at his alma mater.

During the ceremony, West was also named a 'Distinguished West Virginian' by Governor Manchin.

West said he was very thankful for the honor, saying his native state of West Virginia remains very special to him.

The Chelyan native played basketball for the Mountaineers from 1956 to 1960 before going on to his storied career as a player, coach and general manager for the Los Angeles Lakers.

West's youngest son Jonnie, is a freshman on the Mountaineer basketball team.
