Second Lawsuit Filed Against Veterans Home

(Story created: 4/6/07)

Another wrongful death lawsuit has been filed against the Tennessee State Veterans Home in Murfreesboro by a former patient's family.

The family of Charles Compton says the former soldier was both abused and neglected while he lived at the state-run nursing home for veterans last year.

In their lawsuit, they claim the poor care he recieved caused him physical and mental pain and suffering as well as substantially contributed to his death.

Last fall, Compton's daughter-in-law told us how Compton had lost 50 pounds in just five months at the nursing home and that the family often found him unwashed and unchanged.

"Every time I went in, there was feces under his fingernails, on his hands," Debbie Compton told us.

Last month, another former patient's family also sued the state veterans home claiming the severe bedsores and wounds with maggots that he suffered from at the facility ultimately caused his death.

This all follows a NewsChannel 5 investigation last summer that found problems with patient care at the nursing home that led to both a state and federal investigation.

The facility was eventually cited and fined by the state.
