Every year, the Metro Nashville Public Schools goes through a grueling yet thorough process of finding the Teacher of the Year.
Each school nominates one teacher, and then the field is narrowed down to six -- two teachers each from the elementary, middle school and high school levels.
The first nominee is Karen Boles of Hume Fogg Magnet High School.
Whether calculus easy to get or not, Boles makes learning the method of calculation enjoyable.
She described her approach in her own words:
"I try to get the kids actively involved in class. There certainly are days when I lecture and they take notes, but I try to make sure that you know, at least a couple of times a week they are doing some sort of activity."
"Not all of them are as passionate about math as I am, and I understand that, but I want them to at least gain an appreciation for the power of what mathematics will do."
"I can see a light go off in their eye, you know when they learn something. They'll think ‘that's really neat that you can do that with math.' That's what really keeps me going."
