Friends And Foes React To Pacman's Suspension

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Tennessee Titans cornerback Adam "Pacman" Jones' inner circle of friends, lawyers, mother and mentor reacted Tuesday to his year-long suspension.

"He's got a tough guy mentality. He's got to be the tough guy," said his mother, Deborah Jones. "He's got to be the one to say whatever's got to be said, but inside he really feels."

The athlete grew up in Atlanta housing projects. His father was murdered when he was six; his mother went to prison for drug charges shortly afterwards. His hardships stopped at home, his mother said.

Jones was a star athlete who shined during his four years at Westlake High School.

Since he's been a Titan, Jones has already been named on at least 10 police reports.

Those closest to Jones said the source of his trouble was not him; it's a crowd of bad apples he hasn't lost since high school.

"By them being his friends, he doesn't want to cut his friends off, because that's the rule of the hood, I guess you would say," Jones' mother said.

His high school coach Dallas Allen said he hoped the punishment would serve as a wake-up call.

"I'm hoping that at some point he can understand mistakes that he's involved in, and the people around him understand that he's a young kid that still has a life ahead of him," Allen said.

His mother also begged for forgiveness and hoped her son could get a second chance at a career he's worked for his whole life. She said Jones was very upset by the news.

She also said Jones did not spend the day at home but out with his baby daughter.

After repeated run-ins with the law turned his sweet praises sour, even his former boss wanted to see him off the field.

"Thankfully the commissioner put his foot down and I think it was the right thing to do," said former Titans general manager Floyd Reese, who is currently an ESPN commentator.

Jones has been named on police reports at least 10 times in two years, but a February triple shooting at the Minxx strip club in Las Vegas thrust him back into the spotlight.

Despite the opinion of Jones' lawyers and family members that his friends are to blame, Minxx Club Owner Robert Susnar said there's no one else to blame but Jones.

"I think NFL did what should it have been done," Susnar said.

The strip club incident left one man paralyzed, and although police have not linked Jones directly to the shooting, they recommended charges be filed against him. They said he helped incite a melee.

"He doesn't get a one-year suspension from walking. He can't walk because of Pacman Jones," Susnar said.
