Teacher Of The Year Nominee: Sue Gilmore

Every year, the Metro Nashville Public Schools goes through a grueling yet thorough process of finding the Teacher of the Year.

Each school nominates one teacher, and then the field is narrowed down to six -- two teachers each from the elementary, middle school and high school levels.

Sue Gilmore takes her love of history and English to students at Martin Luther King Magnet school. Gilmore tell in her own words how history is about more than names, dates and places.

"History is a big story. What's going on in the world now really has a relationship to what went on in the past."

"It's the students. They have lots of enthusiasm for what they are learning most of the time.

"It's fun to see them figure out how to do things. To help them figure it out."

"Each [student's] presentation has to have either audio or visual or both. I have a gigantic roll of butcher paper in the closet. I know that teachers have sort of thrown out the notion of posters."

"I really enjoy the students, and when I don't I'll quit...The older you get the more influence you have."
