Harmful, Fake Emails Not From BBB

Someone is sending out emails to companies claiming to be from the Better Business Bureau, and these emails contain a potentially dangerous virus.

Consumer investigator Jennifer Kraus discovered it's another one of those phishing schemes...and this one is targeting businesses.

Someone is sending out emails that look like they're from the Better Business Bureau.

The BBB says these emails look like they're a notice about a consumer complaint. They ask the recipient to click on a link to respond to the complaint.

But the BBB says these emails are not from them -- and whatever you do, do not click on that link.

"If you open it, there's a Trojan horse buried in the 'click on it' site that you're supposed to click on and that will send a virus all through your computer system," says the Better Business Bureau's Kathleen Calligan.

"Your sensitive information about your customers, maybe your patients, your client base, any kind of financial information -- that's what they're looking for and that's what you have to protect."

The BBB says it only emails customer complaints to companies that request them.

And, when they do, their emails never ask that you to click on a link that takes you to another site.

This email scam has apparently been making its way around the country since early February.

And already, according to the BBB, at least one company in Georgia has fallen victim to this scam and had its records hacked into.

It now seems to be making its way to businesses here in Middle Tennessee.

Just yesterday, the BBB got 20 calls from companies in the area that had received these emails.
