Crime of the Week: July 24, 2007

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - A drive-by shooting in North Nashville remains unsolved after nearly three months.

Police continue to look for suspects.

Tonight they hope someone will call Crime Stoppers and help them solve the case.

Investigators believe the April 30 shooting may be gang related.

The deadly shooting took place around 7:30 p.m.

Montrell Stewart and some friends walked down Batavia Street and two cars crept up behind them, police said.

"There were two cars that came down the street and they opened fire on one of the subjects, hitting him several times," said Harold Haney, a detective with the Metro Police Department.

Paramedics rushed Stewart to a hospital where doctors pronounced him dead.

Witnesses described the cars involved to police.

One was a champagne-colored four-door Chevy Malibu with tinted windows. The other car was a four-door dark-colored Ford with tinted windows.

"We believe those individuals may be involved in some other cases, too," Haney said. "We've had shots fired on the street where there were several children out in the neighborhood.  We're looking for any help from the community, anyone who may have seen anything."

Police believe the shooting may be gang related, but they need help identifying the suspects.

"We would like to find out who the owners of the vehicles are that were involved or any of the occupants that were in them vehicles," Haney said.

Callers to Crime Stoppers can remain anonymous.

If anyone knows anything about the shooting death of Montrell Stewart police urge them to call 74-Crime.

If the information leads to an arrest and prosecution it could be worth up to $1,000 in cash.
