Taxpayers Pay Insurance for Four Capitol Hill Felons

From AP:

Records show state health insurance benefits will continue at no additional cost for four of the five former legislators convicted in the Tennessee Waltz bribery sting.

A state report shows that Tennessee taxpayers over the next year will spend up to $38,000 a year on insurance for all four, depending on whether they signed up for single or family coverage.

Tennessee Tax Revolt spokesman Ben Cunningham describes the continuing benefit as a "travesty."

State spokeswoman Lola Potter says four of the five convicted legislators are allowed to continue their health care but privacy laws prohibit state officials from specifying the four. The five former legislators who have been convicted in the FBI sting are Republican Chris Newton and Democrats Ward Crutchfield, Roscoe Dixon, John Ford and Kathryn Bowers.

Four of the five convicted lawmakers also are drawing their state pensions.

Newton will not receive a state pension. He joined the retirement system after that eligibility was changed.
