Crime Of The Week: Sept. 11, 2007

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Metro police need the public's help in finding who killed a man as he got out of his car in South Nashville.

The shooting happened around midnight in the parking lot of the Sunrise Apartments on Wallace Road on July 14. Police want to talk to anyone who was near the crime scene the night it happened.

Victor Mendez was coming home from work. He got out of his Jeep and walked to the back end of the vehicle when someone shot him.

"The motive at this time is unclear.  We don't know if he was being robbed or if he was sought out by someone or just a random act of violence," said Metro homicide detective Derry Baltimore.

Police did not get a call until four hours later.

A woman coming out of her apartment at 4 a.m. saw Mendez lying in the parking lot.

Investigators believe somebody saw something because the apartment complex is busy at midnight.

The time of the shooting is one of the few pieces of information police have been able to get from people who live in the largely Hispanic apartment complex.

Residents told police they heard gun shots around midnight.

"In the preliminary investigation we figured out that he was shot around 12 o'clock that night, and we basically don't have anything else to go from after that," Baltimore said.

If anyone knows anything about the murder of Victor Mendez, they should call Crime Stoppers at 74-CRIME.

Callers may remain anonymous. If the information results in the arrest and prosecution of a suspect the caller could earn up to $1,000.
