Crime Of The Week: Sept. 18

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Metro police need the public's help in solving a robbery involving weapons at a Madison sporting goods store.

Four young men jumped the gun counter and stole handguns. The crime was caught on tape.

The men stole guns out of Academy Sports and Outdoors on North Gallatin Road in Madison. It happened around 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 30.

The men entered the store and went to the gun counter. They looked at the handguns and when the clerk walked away they seized the opportunity. One of the men jumped the counter.

"The case was unlocked and they took two handguns from the case and they left the store in a large white vehicle," said Sgt. John Batty of the North Precinct.

It was a white older four-door car. Police said on the store's surveillance video, the men appear to be young. They were seen wearing casual clothing.

"It's excellent video," Batty said. "If you look at the pictures you should be able to recognize them."

Police want to find the suspects quickly because they fear the guns will be used in criminal activity.

"I think this was a planned-out event," Batty said. "They knew exactly what they were going to do before they came into the store."

Anyone with information about the suspects or the crime, is encouraged to call Crime Stoppers at 74-CRIME. Callers will remain anonymous.

"When you call Crime Stoppers you're given a code name or number and that way we can't trace it back to the person that called," Batty said. "They're able to get the reward money without being identified by the police department.

If the information results in the arrest and prosecution of a suspect, the caller could earn up to $1,000.
