Veterans Home May Lose Federal Funding

Posted:

The future of the Tennessee State Veterans Home in Murfreesboro is up in the air.

NewsChannel 5 Investigates has learned that the home is in jeopardy of losing its federal funding.

Investigative reporter Jennifer Kraus has exposed the ongoing problems at the nursing home and discovered that this potentially could affect dozens of patients.

Officials with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services in Atlanta tell NewsChannel 5 that the veterans home is failing to provide quality care to veterans in a safe environment.

They have given the nursing home until next week to make substantial changes.

And, if there are not vast improvements in patient care, the federal government will take the rare step of cutting all Medicare funding to the veterans home.

NewsChannel 5 has reported over the last year and a half about the continuing problems with patient care at the facility.

And two weeks ago, state health inspectors found more critical problems there that put patients lives in danger. That was the third time that's happened since last summer.

Gov. Phil Bredesen has repeatedly said he was taking steps to fix the problems. On Friday, he had no comment.

Earlier this year, the U.S. Department of Justice launched its own investigation into problems with patient care at the Tennessee State Veterans Home. That investigation is continuing.
