RECIPE #4074 - DOWN HOME BUTTER ROLL - Friday, November 16, 2007



2 c self-rising flour (add 1/2 tsp. salt if using all-purpose flour)
1 c butter, softened
1/2 c water
3/4 c butter, softened
1 c white sugar
1-1/2 t nutmeg
1-1/2 c heavy cream or milk
1 c white sugar
1 t vanilla extract
cinnamon (optional)
brown sugar (optional)

Directions: Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Coat 7x11 inch pan with cooking spray. Place flour in a large bowl and cut 1 cup butter in thoroughly with a fork until mixture resembles bread crumbs. Stir in water and press dough together with your hands. Roll out dough into a rectangle onto a floured surface about 1/4 inch thick. Spread 3/4 cup butter evenly over the dough, then sprinkle with sugar and nutmeg. Roll-up the dough jelly roll style and pinch to seal. Cut into 12 even pieces. In a small saucepan, heat heavy cream, 1 cup sugar and vanilla until mixture begins to bubble. Pour carefully over rolls in prepared pan. Sprinkle with cinnamon and/or brown sugar (optional). Bake in oven until golden brown, about 30 to 40 minutes.
