LAFAYETTE, Tenn. - A massive search and rescue effort is now underway in Macon County where 14 people died in a series of storms that swept across the state.
A tornado that ripped through the county killed 14 people.
There is concern that number will grow. Search and rescue officials said 218 people in Macon County are still missing.
The tornado damaged and destroyed hundreds of homes. Many of the neighborhoods weren't accessible until Thursday.
For the first time, emergency crews made their way into areas previously off-limits to rescue crews.
There is a good possibility many of the unaccounted for are staying with friends or they left the area.
But officials said some simply might be trapped.
Three people were found alive and unharmed, but stuck in a basement Wednesday night.
