Former state Sen. Jerry Cooper could face some hefty fines.
That's the word from the state attorney general.
It follows questions first raised by NewsChannel 5 Investigates.
Back in December, the Warren County Democrat appeared before a state board to ask for leniency for illegally pocketing $95,000 from his campaign.
The Registry of Election Finance had fined him $120,000.
But Cooper's lawyer argued that, under state law, the board could only fine him $10,000.
Now the attorney general says Cooper could actually be fined $10,000 for each of the 23 checks he wrote.
The Registry will take up Cooper's request next Wednesday.
