(AP) ALBANY, N.Y. - New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer said he would resign effective Monday, after being linked to a prostitution ring.
Spitzer will be replaced by New York Lt. Gov. David Paterson, who will become New York's first black governor.
The resignation would complete a stunning fall from power after Spitzer was nationally disgraced by links to a high-priced prostitution ring.
According to a law enforcement official, the New York Democrat's involvement in the ring was caught on a federal wiretap as part of an investigation opened in recent months.
Officials said Spitzer spent up to $80,000 with the call-girl service Emperors Club VIP.
Since his public apology on Monday, Spitzer has been in his family's New York City apartment considering his options.
