Tornado Victims Rebuild In Macon County

Posted:

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Six weeks after severe storms ripped across the state, residents in one of the hardest-hit areas are rebuilding their homes.

More than 170 houses were destroyed by last month's tornadoes in Macon County.

Many people in Lafayette decided to rebuild their houses. Some will be ready as soon as this summer.

Meanwhile, the city is in the last stages of the cleanup process.

Most of the debris has already been hauled off. The last of the storm debris should be taken away over the next month and a half.

Residents said they're ready to resume their normal lives.

"This is home. When it blew down me and my wife said we'd build back because this is where we wanna be," said tornado victim Jerry Scurlock.

Fourteen people died in Macon County as a result of one of the state's deadliest disasters.

Many Macon County families who lost their homes are still waiting for mobile homes promised to them by FEMA.

Disaster officials are still testing those homes for formaldehyde, but they could be brought up to Tennessee within the next month.
