A NewsChannel 5 investigation showed how dangerous novelty lighters can be in the hands of children.
On Monday, Tennessee lawmakers passed a law that would ban sales of the lighters unless they are equipped with safety devices.
The lighters resemble toys.
State Sen. Bill Ketron, R- Murfreesboro, said the legislature wants to make sure that the devices don't fall into the hands of children who could accidentally burn property or themselves.
The bill has been sent to Gov. Phil Bredesen for his signature.
The state Fire Marshal's office has also launched a program to educate parents about the dangers of these lighters.
