Crime of Week: April 15, 2008

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Metro police are trying to stop a series of purse snatchings and robberies in Madison.

One of the crimes was caught on tape.

One of the attacks happened in a Wal-Mart parking lot in broad daylight.  The attack happened in the middle of the day.

A 63-year-old woman cashed an income tax refund check inside the store at 2232 N. Gallatin Road.

Police said two men and a woman were watching.

"They were at the counter where people were getting their checks cashed and they noticed this victim," said Billy Jackson of the Metro Police Department.

Police said the victim walked outside the store. The female suspect walked to her car, but the two men grabbed the victim and took her purse.

"She wouldn't release it," Jackson said. "The male suspect grabbed her and threw her to the ground."

The victim suffered a broken arm, and lost her purse.

The suspects jumped into the getaway car and took off.

Before they got in the car, surveillance cameras got good pictures of the suspects.

"You can tell if you know these guys or not.  We need somebody to give us a call," Jackson said.

The suspects' car was also captured by a security camera. It appeared to be a gold 2004 to 2006 four-door Pontiac Grand Prix.

"You've got to understand this was at 11:20 in the morning before lunchtime at Wal-Mart," Jackson said. "You should be able to go to the store and feel safe and not be in fear."

Police said the robbery is similar to others reported in the Madison and North Nashville area.

"It' something that should not be happening, but it is happening and it's something we should all be aware of," Jackson said.

If anyone has information about the attack and robbery of the woman at the Madison Wal-Mart call Crime Stoppers at 74-CRIME.

Police said if anyone is ever in this situation they should let their purse or wallet go, and not take the chance of getting hurt or even killed.
