Hands-On Experience At Science Center

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - With the cost of gas going sky high everyone is considering which trips to make and which ones to put off.

Local schools are no different.

That is why the Adventure Science Center's School Outreach program is now more important than ever.

Gabriella Lamothe recently visited Haywood Elementary to give students a demonstration about the heart.

"It's something that's really, really important," she asked a group of students. "Does everybody know what it is? What your heart is?"

She was representing the science center's School Outreach program. It is a chance for students to get the hands-on experience they would get at the center, but much closer to home.

In these tough economic times, that's important.

"It's important because they came to us.  We didn't have to get a bus. We didn't have to pay for a bus, so it makes it very economical to come here," said one teacher.

The lessons are geared to the appropriate age range.

"For the younger ones, you have to be pretty creative because a lot of the concepts, they're not going to grasp," Lamothe said before she engaged the children in a jumping exercise to show how the heart rate rises.

"I think they have fun," she said, adding that the students also learn.

"I think that's the best thing," she said.

NewsChannel 5 presented a check to the Adventure Science Center for its School Outreach program.
