(AP) NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Tennessee State quarterback Antonio Heffner won the Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Week award for his performance in a win over Southern University.
Heffner, a 6-2, 207, senior from Memphis, completed 23 of 29 passes for 315 yards and two touchdowns as Tennessee State beat Southern 34-32 in the 10th Annual John Merritt Classic on Saturday.
Heffner also rushed the ball eight times for 68 yards for a total of 383 yards in offense.
The Tigers' win in the John Merritt Classic was their first in three years. The win also marked the first time since 2004 the Tennessee State has opened the season 2-0.
