Crime Of The Week: Sept. 30, 2008

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -   A call to Crime Stoppers could help police solve a robbery in North Nashville.

A convenience store clerk thought the suspect was just joking when he wanted her money.

But it was no joke after he pulled out a gun, and fired a shot.

Police said the clerk was lucky she wasn't hurt.

The robbery happened at about 11 p.m. at the Scott's Market also known as the Daily's at 501 Hickory Hills Drive.

Police said a man walked into the store first to the candy rack and then to the cooler where he picked up a can of Red Bull.

He walked to the counter and told the clerk to open the cash register.

"The victim says she thought he was joking until he pulled a gun on her and asked again to open the register," said Metro detective Billy Jackson.

Then, the suspect fired the gun.

"She says a shot was fired from the gun that hit the register. She said he immediately grabbed money out of the register and ran out of the store," Jackson said.

The robber ran behind the store and out of sight. Police are not sure if the shot he fired was intentional or accidental.

"Both are very dangerous. If this guy is nervous with his weapon.  We could be looking at a homicide now instead of a robbery.  Innocent victims in the store could have been shot," Jackson said.

Police said the suspect was a black male about 6 feet tall. He weighed about 155 pounds and wore blue jeans, a white T-shirt and a black hat.

"We've got really good video, pictures, shots, so if anybody can pick him out or knows who he is give us a call," Jackson said.

If anyone can help police solve this crime call Crime Stoppers at 74-CRIME.

The information could be worth up to $1,000 cash.
