Dog Awarded For Helping Police Nab Rape Suspect

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - For the better part of a decade, the so-called Wooded Rapist terrorized women in Middle Tennessee.

Earlier this year, Metro police caught Jason Burdick, who they believe raped women in three Midstate counties.

Bailey, an 8-year-old family dog, hardly looks like a guard dog.

Owned by Sharon and Doug Cuyler, the pooch doesn't look capable of standing up to a miniature poodle let alone an accused serial rapist.

"I might be a ball of fur, but I'm tough," Cuyler said.

In April, the Cuylers were sleeping in their camper outside a relative's home in Brentwood when Bailey woke them up.

"She didn't bark, she only growled," said Sharon Cuyler.

She looked out her window and saw a man standing outside.

"He was a very menacing looking person. He was all black and a ski mask," she said.

She yelled and the man fled.  Police later caught Jason Burdick in the neighborhood.

"My heart just dropped. I was flabbergasted. I didn't know what to think or say," she said.

Much has been said about the dog's actions.

The dog earned the "Dog of the Year" award from Cause for the Paws on Saturday.

"You're gonna have to have your own room in the house," Sharon Cuyler said.

Yet, in her shining moment the little dog famous for her big growl didn't make a peep.

"No, she hasn't barked since we've been here," Cuyler during the ceremony.

Cuyler said she was happy hr family was in the right place at the right time.

"And that Bailey could help apprehend the wooded rapist," she said. "Now, I hope the women who were victims can rest in peace."

Bailey received the award at Cause for the Paws, a fundraiser and awareness event that helps Metro Animal Control and other local animal rescue groups.
