22 People Robbed At Gunpoint In Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, Tenn. - Springfield police are investigating 22 armed robberies that happened within the last two months.

People have been robbed in their homes or businesses.

Police arrested five men including Steven Walker, who was arrested Thursday afternoon.

Twenty two people have been robbed at gunpoint since Sept. 10.

Springfield Lt. Jimmy Grogan said the suspects are targeting people in businesses such as gas stations, loan stores and a video store.

The investigation shows there's not one group committing all the crimes.

Grogan some incidents involved pistols, rifles and a hammer.

Police believe that some of the five men are connected to more than one robbery.

Restaurateur Saki Kouzouglidis said they were shocked to hear about the amount of armed robberies. He owns a restaurant next door to one of the stores that was robbed.

Kouzouglidis said the economy is probably part of the cause for the crimes.

"People are thinking of robbing a store is an alternative, but it's really not because eventually it's definitely going to catch up to them," he said.

Police said that's exactly what they plan to do.

"We're not going to stop until we get them. We will catch them sooner or later," Grogan said.

Three people were shot during the robberies. They sustained non- life threatening injuries.

Police said the victims were shot when they tried to run or fought back.

Police advised when confronted by a gunman, it is safer to cooperate.
