One month after a man was shot and killed while retrieving a trashcan outside of a South Nashville home, people gathered to remember him and other victims of gun violence.
On Saturday evening, Partners in the Struggle held a flashlight prayer vigil at the Napier Community Center to honor 74-year-old Ruxin Wang.
Officials with the Metro Nashville Police Department said Wang went outside to retrieve his trashcan when he was gunned down on Claiborne Street.
His son, Yun Wang, said his mother has moved to another home after having nightmares living in the home where her husband died.
"When we say my dad passed away it's extremely unfortunate, but the neighbors and friends and church family and the Chinese community, everybody came together to support us. It made us go through this most difficult time a little bit easier," Yun said.
Since his father's passing, Wang said at times he would start to make plans with his dad in mind and then remembered he's no longer alive.
In a letter, Wang's wife, Yongling Zhai, said her husband was a good man.
"He was very accepting of people. He did not live in fear of being harmed by others, nor was he argumentative. If someone had needs, he would do anything for him. Surely for him to meet such a tragic death, must be to symbolize fully and clearly the contrast between God's justice and the evil in the world," Zhai said.
"The whole violence in Nashville is incredibly disturbing at this point. The police department said yesterday that already 99 people have died in Nashville this year. My dad is one of them. He's not just a number. He's our father," Yun said.
