A 26-year-old man was shot after his car was rear-ended by an attempted robber in Davidson County.

The incident happened near Highway 100 and Old Hickory Road around 9:30 p.m. Monday.

According to investigators, the driver of a Honda or Nissan rear-ended another vehicle.

When the victim got out of the car, police said a gunman ran up to him and demanded his belongings. According to witnesses, the victim was shot after he tried to push away from the gunman.

Police said another man in a separate vehicle drove off after the suspect pointed the gun in his direction. The gunman got back into the car and began to pursue the second man, who managed to get away from the suspects.

He returned to the scene a short time later and spoke to officers.

The victim was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where police said he's in critical but stable condition.

Investigators said this incident may be related to two vehicle thefts Monday outside convenience stores on Old Hickory Boulevard and Highway 70 South. The keys were left inside and both vehicles were left unattended.
