NASHVILLE, Tenn. – One person made it safely out of a home that caught on fire, according to officials.
The fire happened at a home in the 900 block of Benton Avenue Sunday afternoon.
Authorities said the man, a veteran, was cooking when a kitchen appliance caught on fire and the flames quickly spread.
Those on scene said smoke and flames were heavily visible and parts of the home had collapsed.
“Flames were billowing out of the second story,” said Nita Gamache, a volunteer with the Red Cross. “What was most impressive was our Nashville Fire department put that ladder up there, and two of those men and went straight toward those flames.”
Witnesses and officials said the home was completely destroyed. Many at the scene said it was sad to see their neighbor's home and memories disappear.
The victim was displaced and receiving help from the Red Cross.
