A former bookkeeper has been indicted on a charge of theft.
Officials with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and investigators with the Tennessee Comptroller of the Treasury had been investigating the finances of the Wayne County School Department on June 3, 2013.
That investigation came after an audit by the Comptroller’s office discovered discrepancies.
Those with the TBI developed information that 34-year-old Heather Hunt Long had received several payroll checks from 2010 to 2013 that were determined to be unauthorized.
Long, of Waynesboro, had been employed as the Federal Projects Bookkeeper and payroll clerk.
Friday, a grand jury indicted Long on one count of theft over $10,000.
She was booked into the Wayne County Jail on a $25,000 bond. Officials confirmed she was no longer employed by the Wayne County School Department.
