No charges were expected to be filed against two parents after a three-year-old accidentally shot himself inside their south Nashville residence.

Officials with the Metro Nashville Police Department said the boy shot himself in the arm at a home on Whittset Road Monday night.

At the time, his father and 12-year-old sister were preparing dinner in the kitchen while his three other siblings, ages 6, 7, and 9, were watching television in the family room.

Police said the boy wandered into his parents' bedroom and found a .32 caliber revolver in a cloth holster from a bookshelf.

Shortly after 6:30 p.m., the family heard a shot and found the injured child.

Officers believed the wound was "through and through" and didn't hit bone or vital organs. The child was still transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

His mother was at work when the shooting happened.

The police department’s Youth Services Division is leading the investigation.  No charges are being placed at this time.
