The rapid growth seen in Spring Hill may impact a rustic and agricultural landmark of the city.

The silo that sits along US-31 near the Walmart has been there for at least 70 years and have held sentimental value for many residents.

"You knew you're getting into Spring Hill as soon as you top that little hill and see the silo. It just has sentimental value to a lot of people," Mike Fussell, a Maury County resident, said.

Mayor Rick Graham considered the silo as a "reminder of the agricultural past."

However, the future of the old structure has been questioned by those who say it is part of Spring Hill history. The silo is on the edge of a small and congested road that needs to be widened as soon as possible.

"It can be treacherous. It can be hectic out here," said one traveler.

"Transportation is our number one issue and you can ask any city official here and that is what they will tell you," Spring Hill Communications Officer Jamie Page told NewsChannel 5. "We have had over 15,000 residents added just within the last 10 years."

While there is no concrete date on when US-31 will be widened, it is a project that will most likely remove the silo.

"Whatever plan we use in terms of width of the right of way, we may not necessarily take out the silo itself but it would probably have to be removed because it would be too close to the road," Page said.

An approved project that costs at least three million dollars to widen Duplex Road in the city was already set to begin late this year or early next year.

Most recently, the buzz in town surrounds the recent plan to open a Chick-Fil-A on the property in two years. The developer of the land plans to include the fast food chain as part of a future project that he will discuss with the city this month.

Hank Cannon with Reality Link told NewsChannel 5 that he does not plan to remove the silo.

The mayor would like to keep the silo as long as it does not interfere with safety and traffic. He welcomes the idea of disassembling and relocating the silo but engineers have not even researched the idea. If it stays, he would like to add a dome top.

Meanwhile, Fussell has started a GoFundMe page to raise money to preserve or relocate the silo.
