12-Year-Old Accidentally Shot By 2-Year-Old

A child has been injured after being accidentally shot by a 2-year-old.

Authorities confirmed the incident happened around 9:30 a.m. Sunday in the 200 block of Blue Hill Drive.

Reports stated a 12-year-old was shot in the leg accidentally by the 2-year-old when the toddler picked up a pistol from the door pocket of his aunt's vehicle and pulled the trigger.

The victim was taken to Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt for treatment of moderate injuries and was expected to be okay.

Authorities said the aunt had just arrived at the home in Hermitage to visit her sister when the shooting happened.

No charges were placed. Those with the police department's Youth Services Division were handling the investigation.

According to the Safe TN Project, this shooting was the 69th unintentional shooting so far in 2016. It was also the 26th shooting involving a child and the 18th related to “an improperly stored firearm.”
