Tens of thousands of Metro Nashville Public Schools students are headed back to class for the first day of school.

Wednesday also marks a new era for MNPS: Dr. Shawn Joseph begins the first of his four-year contract as Director of Schools.

Dr. Joseph said he plans to visit every Metro School before the end of the school year.

He visited Maplewood High School – a school that has a new principal this year - and said he wants Metro Nashville to be one of the best urban school districts in the country.

"We are asking our staff, 'what does it look like to walk into a school and see people intentionally working to exceed your expectations' that is something we can measure and check on this year," Joseph said.

For both Metro and Murfreesboro City Schools, today is a half-day for all students.

Officers will also be out in full force this week, so drivers should pay attention to school zones when heading to work.

Remember, there is no school on Thursday. Friday is a full-day for grades 1 through 12 and a half-day for Pre-K and Kindergarten.
