Family members have confirmed 63-year-old Mike Beazley died in an early morning house fire in the 1000 block of Battery Lane.

Firefighters responded to the home around 2 a.m. Sunday, but the flames were too hot and too big for crews to make entry. One woman escaped.

"The homeowner informed us that her brother was still inside," said Metro Fire Captain William Swann.

The victim's ex-wife learned about Mike's death from a firefighter on the scene. She said she wasn't able to contact her former sister-in-law because her cell phone had likely burned in the fire.

"We were married for 37 years," Pat Beazley said. "I still cared about him and loved him. That's not something you forget, no matter what."

Pat said Mike lost his only child, a daughter from a previous marriage, more than a decade ago. She and Mike raised their grandson together.

"This will hit him close to home," Pat said.

Firefighters have been working to determine how the fire started, but fire officials said the home was built prior to the Civil War. Parts of the home were made completely out of logs.
