Semi Trailer Fire Closes I-40 In Putnam County

The trailer of a semi caught on fire on Interstate 40 in Putnam County, shutting down a portion of the roadway.

The incident happened around 6:45 p.m. Sunday in the eastbound lanes near mile marker 274 at Silver Point.

Details had not been released regarding the cause of the fire. Several people at the scene sent photos to NewsChannel 5 showing heavy smoke and flames.

No word had been released regarding if any injuries were involved.

The roadway was initially closed to eastbound drivers. Westbound traffic was not affected.

Around 8:45 p.m. Sunday, officials said the right lane would be blocked for an extended amount of time due to the amount of cargo that needed to be removed from that area.
