A new statue honoring Supreme Court Judge A. A. Birch Jr. has been unveiled.

The eight-foot bronze statue has been situated outside of the Justice A. A. Birch Building and featured a four-foot granite base including a historical marker detailing his accomplishments.

Birch has been the only person in the state to ever hold a seat on each judicial level in Tennessee.

He was also the first African American to serve as General Sessions Court Judge.

Birch passed away in 2011. The statue was unveiled Saturday.
