MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WTVF) — A mother and her son died in a duplex fire that happened in Murfreesboro early Saturday morning.

The Murfreesboro Fire Rescue Department (MFRD) says crews responded to the fire in the 1700 block of Craig Court around 3 a.m.

"There was heavy smoke visible when firefighters arrived, and fire coming through the roof of one side of the duplex," said Joe Ball, MFRD battalion chief. "Firefighters began an aggressive attack on the fire and quickly extinguished it."

Crews found the 33-year-old mother and her 7-year-old son in a bedroom of the duplex and got them out of the home. Paramedics immediately started treatment. They were taken to Saint Thomas Rutherford Hospital, where they were pronounced dead.

Murfreesboro Police Department helped a woman escape from the other side of the duplex. She was not injured.

One side of the duplex sustained significant fire, smoke and water damage. Damage to the other side was minimal.

The fire and its cause are currently under investigation.
