A bill has been filed on Capitol Hill, which would stop the proposed rock quarry near Old Hickory Lake.

Residents who live near the site have been trying to stop it in Metro Council.
Democratic Representative Bill Beck filed three bills on the matter Thursday. The quarry is in his district.

The proposed rock quarry in Old Hickory is on Burnett Road where Industrial Developers owns 155 acres there.

One of Representative Beck's bills would create buffer zones between a quarry and a park, school or residential area.

It mirrored a new law that was passed by the Metro Council, but city attorneys believe that new law may not apply to the land in Old Hickory.

One of the other two bills Beck has filed was called the Dam Safety Act. It would make operating a  it a rock quarry within a one mile radius of any dam that is operated by the U-S Corps of Army Engineers illegal.

Representative Beck said the constant explosions and vibrations from blasting could make Old Hickory Dam unsafe.

“We're taking matters, safety matters, into the hands of the state and saying, no we do not want a mining operation such as this with constant blasting, constant vibrations to take place within one mile of any dam that is controlled by the Corps of Engineers,” said Beck.

Beck said there's a concern the blasting could cause structural damage to the dam.

He said there was no reason to create issues like the ones found at Wolf Creek and Center Hill where the federal government has spent hundreds of millions of dollars on repairs.
