A college student began searching for a new place to live after a bullet flew into his bedroom during a gunman opened fire at his apartment complex.

Last week, someone fired a bullet that flew through his roommate's window, through the shower, and landed just a foot away from his bed.

Lucas McKinney, told NewsChannel 5 he had just gotten into bed at his complex at University Ridge Apartments when the night erupted into chaos.

"Not even 30 seconds later my roommate comes bustin' down my door. Hey man we just got shot up get down on the ground," said McKinney.

Police have responded to "shots fired" calls involving the complex in the past, as well as a violent home invasion in February.

But it's not the only problem housing in the area:  just across campus at a different apartment building, a 23-year old was found murdered.

McKinney said he was able to get out of his lease, and has already made plans to move.
