Two people suffered smoke inhalation during a two-alarm fire in the Nippers Corner area of South Nashville.

The incident was reported around 10 a.m. Wednesday in the 600 block of Derby Trace. Crews arrived on the scene by 10:09 a.m.

Officials said they believe the blaze started in the back on the first floor but the cause remains unknown.

More than 60 first responders were called to the scene.

Two people were taken to an area with smoke inhalation. Multiple pets, including ferrets and dogs, were also rescued from the building, one of which suffered injuries.

Reports stated the injured animal was a 5-year-old boxer named Carolina. The owners said they were not home at the time, and they added the dog was taken to a veterinary hospital where she will have to stay several days and may have to undergo surgery for burns.

We talked with a woman who helped move the dog by putting it in a crate. The dog was covered in burn injuries.

"I went and grabbed my crate because it's a good 30, 40, 50 pounds," said Jennifer, who did not give her last name. "We dropped everything and took care of what we needed to take care of. We're human and just kept our emotions and just did the right thing. I think the world needs a lot more of that."

A gofundme account* was started to help the dog's recovery and the owners who lost nearly everything in the fire.

Six people have been displaced as a result of the fire.
