The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation has opened an investigation after a man died at the Rutherford County Jail.

Rutherford County Sheriff Robert Arnold confirmed the man died while going through the booking process.

According to a preliminary investigation, TBI agents said 32-year-old Jonathan Maxwell hanged himself with a pay phone cord in a holding cell just after his arrest.

He had been taken into custody for an alleged domestic assault against his wife.

Officials said an autopsy had been planned. No further details were released.
