KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Two dogs have been found beheaded in rural Knox County.

Local media outlets report that the dogs' bodies were found Wednesday inside two garbage bags along the side of a road just north of Fort Loudoun Lake.

Knox County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Martha Dooley says the pair had been skinned, burned, and had their legs broken.

Investigators collected the bodies and will have a veterinarian examine them for more evidence. It's unclear at this point if the dogs were killed before or after they were injured.

Investigators on the scene were unable to identify what breed the dogs were.
