A 5-year-old girl has been killed in a house fire in Franklin County.
Officials from the Franklin County Sheriff's Office said the mother went across the street Monday morning to use the neighbor's phone around 8 a.m. to call the electric company and add money to their account.
It was then that she saw smoke and flames coming from the house and called 911 emergency dispatch.
Three children were still in the home - 5-year-old Sophie Burks and her siblings, 1-year-old Landon Burks and 6-month-old Leah Tigue.
The first officer on the scene was Deputy Jason Brockman, a school resource officer at North Lake Elementary, which was about a half-mile away.
When Deputy Brockman arrived on the scene, he found the mother outside the house. They both ran in together and managed to pull the three children out.
Sophie died from her injuries.
Officials said Landon and Leah were transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center burn unit for treatment. Landon was listed in critical condition, and Leah was stable.
